At the Georgian American School, under the leadership of Tamara Chelidze, the librarian, the long-term informal learning project "Meet Famous People" is introducing students to important historical figures from Georgia’s past.
On February 19th, the focus of the project was on the heroic life of Maro Makashvili. Sidonia Kochalidze, a student from the 5-1 grade, presented with great passion the story of Maro, a young woman who gave her life in the fight for her country’s freedom.
Maro Makashvili – A Symbol of Patriotism
In 1921, as Georgia’s independence was under threat, 19-year-old Maro volunteered for the military medical corps. On February 19th, during the battle of Kodjori, she was tragically killed by an enemy shell. Yet, her bravery continues to inspire to this day.
This project is helping students connect more deeply with Georgian history, heroism, and patriotism, encouraging them to understand and appreciate the importance of loving and defending their homeland.
"Those who fight for the freedom of their homeland never die!"
